# What makes one shell "better" than another for shooting clays?

If you’ve ever tried your hand at clay pigeon shooting you’ll probably have asked yourself the same question. Certainly **one shell may be objectively better in terms of specifications**, and therefore the ballistic performance you can expect from it.

But **which of these specifications are important** and essential for you?

In this case, the answer isn’t so easy, because you’ll have to consider your personal needs, which will also depend on your experience and shooting technique.

## How to choose the perfect shell

In this guide the idea is to **offer some advice to help you make this difficult choice**, to see which are the most important points to consider when choosing your ideal shell for shooting clays.

We’ll use the following checklist to consider these fundamental aspects:

- Shell velocity
- Wad
- Shot load
- Your level of experience
- Context in which you’ll be shooting (Training or Competitions)
- Cost
